Interactive Learning Environments · 2024

An analysis of comments on Korean-learning videos, examining what participation around social media content contributes to language learning.

Study and methods

Exploratory observation of TikTok and YouTube and analysis of 570 English- and Spanish-language comments.

Key findings

  • Comments address creators, the community and questions about Korean, supporting resource sharing and language reflection.
  • The analysed comments contain no interaction in Korean: engagement around a language does not necessarily provide practice in that language.

Findings concern the sampled comments and videos, rather than measured changes in proficiency.

How this work can be used

Use the study to examine comment-based learning or to design activities that connect language reflection with opportunities for target-language interaction.
