English title: Untangling the web: critical reading of foreign languages students in digital environments

María José Valero, Boris Vázquez, Daniel Cassany

Ocnos · 2015

A qualitative study of how translation students interpret the cultural positions and viewpoints in an online British news text.

Study and methods

Thirteen students completed a reading and translation task. Five also took part in interviews and screen recordings of their online activity.

Key findings

  • Many participants had difficulty identifying the viewpoint expressed in the text.
  • The analysis linked these difficulties to limited attention to sociocultural context and ineffective use of online reading resources.

A small qualitative study of one reading task; its contribution concerns reading practices and interpretation.

How this work can be used

Use this study to inform research on critical digital reading and to design activities that ask learners to examine a text’s author, audience, cultural references and viewpoint.
